This is surprising as the alliance backing Merz has 328 seats in the Bundestag. If it fails to win an absolute majority in the second round, the electoral process will continue. Merz, who is to lead a coalition with the Social Democrats, faces pressure to show leadership in the current crisis. He also has to prove his governmental skills, having never previously held such a post.
