Canada, through the Minister of Culture, Marc Miller, has announced a bill that sets the minimum age of 16 for creating accounts on social media, following the example of other countries such as Australia and Indonesia.

The bill comes in response to concerns about the negative effects of online content on children's mental health. Miller emphasized the importance of protecting children, noting that social media can contribute to anxiety, isolation, and depression. Although a ban is being introduced for those under 16, the bill provides exemptions for platforms that implement appropriate protective measures. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in penalties of up to 3% of global revenue. Experts emphasize that, although young people may find ways to circumvent restrictions, it is essential to change the way applications operate.

The bill comes in the context of recent events, including a lawsuit against OpenAI related to the use of artificial intelligence technologies in dangerous contexts.
