A group of MPs from Great Britain has sent a letter to ministers, requesting a ban on the animated series 'Masha and the Bear', on the grounds that it represents a form of Russian propaganda. The series, extremely popular on YouTube, has been criticized by Ukrainian officials and the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, being considered a tool of 'soft power'.
The MPs, from various parties, highlighted episodes in which the main character, Masha, wears symbols associated with the Soviet regime, arguing that these normalize military iconography for children. The letter was coordinated by Liberal Democrat MP Tom Gordon and signed by over 50 colleagues, calling for urgent measures following Netflix's announcement regarding the acquisition of two new seasons.
Animaccord, the studio behind the series, rejected the accusations, stating that it is a private company that produces content for children, without links to propaganda. The Ministry of Culture declined to comment, and ITV stated that the broadcast of the series complies with regulatory standards.
