Botswana has become the first country in Africa with a high number of HIV cases to achieve Gold Tier status from the WHO, recognizing its efforts to eliminate vertical transmission of the virus. With around 360,000 people infected, the country has managed to reduce the mother-to-child transmission rate to 1.2%. This achievement builds on two decades of political leadership and health innovation. Botswana continues to develop strategies to integrate HIV prevention into antenatal care.
