Borge Brende, the president and CEO of the World Economic Forum (WEF), announced that he is stepping down shortly after the organization launched an independent investigation into his relationship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Brende, who has led WEF since 2017, stated that he made this decision after documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice revealed that he had business meetings with Epstein.

In his statement, Brende emphasized that his time at WEF was fulfilling and that it is time for the organization to move forward without distractions. He stated that he was not aware of Epstein's criminal activities before their meeting in 2018 and regrets that he did not conduct more thorough checks.

Following his resignation, Alois Zwinggi will take over as interim president, and the Board of Directors will oversee the transition. The revelations related to Epstein have had a significant impact on the political and business elite, prompting international investigations.
