Bob Dylan, 85, met Pope Leo XIV, 71, at the Vatican on Wednesday. The meeting included an exchange of gifts, but the topics discussed were not made public.
The Pope gave the artist a rosary, while Bob Dylan presented the Pontiff with a copy of his autobiography, according to Vatican News. The American musician is in Rome for a concert tour.
The meeting also drew attention because of Dylan’s outfit: he wore a black hood, leather gloves and carried an umbrella. Photographs published after the audience sparked reactions on social media.
Pope Leo XIV has previously expressed his appreciation for Dylan’s work. In July, he quoted lyrics from the anti-war poem “Go Away You Bomb,” written in 1963, in the preface to a book about war and peace. The artist previously met another pope in 1997, when he performed in Bologna at an event attended by John Paul II. Bob Dylan received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.
