The meeting comes a day ahead of Taiwan's presidential election, with Washington trying to dissuade Beijing from taking any action against the autonomous island. Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te is favored to succeed incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen, both of whom are seen as supporters of Taiwan's independence.
