The Vatican announced the acceptance of his resignation, and the bishop pleaded not guilty to the 16 charges, including embezzlement and money laundering.

The crimes were reported by a church employee, and Hana Shaleta was arrested on March 5 while attempting to leave the United States. His lawyer mentioned that the bishop had a planned trip to Germany.
