Before the failure of negotiations within the governing coalition, Belgian trade unions organized protests in Brussels against the budgetary measures, with incidents in the area of Central Station, where police used tear gas to disperse a group. The demonstrations severely disrupted public transport and led to the cancellation of 140 flights at the capital’s airport.
The trade unions criticized the cost of living and the pressure on employees, supporting an alternative plan that could raise up to 21 billion euros without drastic spending cuts; meanwhile, the government considered spending cuts in several areas and a possible VAT increase, a measure opposed by the Reformist Movement.
