Beijing and Washington have decided to prepare new negotiations between the leaders of the two major economies to prevent an escalation of tariffs. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a meeting next week with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, who is responsible for trade. Trade tensions have recently intensified after China announced tightening controls on rare metal exports, which provoked strong reactions from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese products. Although trade relations are tense, recent discussions between officials from the two countries have been described as "sincere and constructive." Despite the threats, Trump suggested that he should meet with Xi Jinping at the APEC summit at the end of the month.
