The administration in Barcelona has decided to increase the tourist tax, which will reach a maximum of 15 euros per night, starting in April. This measure, approved by the regional Parliament of Catalonia, aims to reduce overtourism and support the construction of affordable housing.

Currently, tourists pay between 5 and 7.5 euros per night, and guests at five-star hotels will be taxed up to 15 euros. A quarter of the revenue generated by this tax will be allocated to solving the housing crisis in the city.

Barcelona, which receives approximately 15.8 million tourists annually, has also announced plans to ban short-term rentals starting in 2028. Manel Casals, the director of the Hotel Association of Barcelona, has warned that these measures could negatively affect the city's tourism.
