An Austrian official has said the European Union should be open to resuming imports of Russian natural gas in the future if a peace agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine. The European Commission is preparing a proposal to ban Russian imports to reduce EU dependence on Russian energy by 2027. Although Austria has emphasized the need to reconsider the ban in the event of a peace, other member states have not supported the idea. European officials also warn that resuming imports could be a strategic mistake.
