The Australian government has announced a 2.25% tax on tech giants that do not reach agreements with the media. The measure aims to support the journalism sector.

The Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, has proposed a plan whereby technology giants such as Google, Meta, and TikTok will have to pay a tax of 2.25% on local revenues for informational content, if they do not reach commercial agreements with news publishers.

This measure is part of the legislative project called News Bargaining Incentive (NBI), which is open for public consultation until May 18. The government believes that the current negotiation system is insufficient and hopes that the new model will generate up to 250 million Australian dollars annually for the journalism sector.

Communications Minister Anika Wells stated that it is fair for digital platforms to contribute to the work of journalism. The tax will apply to companies with annual revenues of over 250 million Australian dollars, and the funds raised will be redistributed to the media based on the employment of journalists.

This initiative is considered essential for the viability of journalism and the diversity of information in Australia.
