The German luxury car manufacturer Audi intends to invest approximately four billion dollars in building its first factory in the United States, in the state of Georgia, to expand its sales in the American market and reduce costs generated by customs tariffs, while parent group Volkswagen is preparing layoffs and the closure of several plants in Germany, CNBC reports.
The new factory in Georgia is expected to begin production at the beginning of the 2030s and assemble the Audi Q7, Q8 and Q9 SUVs. Annual capacity is estimated at up to 200,000 vehicles, approximately half of which will be exported outside the United States.
Audi thus becomes the latest major German premium automobile manufacturer to establish production capacity in the US, after Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
