The incident took place on Sunday, during a service attended by hundreds of people. The suspect, Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former marine, was shot dead by police after the attack. The FBI is investigating the case as a "domestic terrorism act," and explosive devices were found in the suspect's van. The church burned for hours, and rescue teams continue to search the ruins. The attack occurred a day after the death of the president of the LDS Church.
