Argentina celebrates 50 years since the military coup

On Tuesday, Argentina marked 50 years since the military coup of 1976, with a large protest in Buenos Aires, where tens of thousands of people marched towards Plaza de Mayo. Unions, human rights organizations, and leftist groups carried banners with the message 'Nunca mas' and paid tribute to those who disappeared during the dictatorship.

Activists estimate that up to 30,000 people were kidnapped or killed between 1976 and 1983, and the fate of many remains unknown. Estela de Carlotto, president of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo association, emphasized that nearly 300 people whose identities have been changed are still being sought. The commemoration took place in the context of political tensions, with President Javier Milei contesting the figure of 30,000 missing, citing a list of 8,753 names.

The majority of Argentinians have a negative view of the dictatorship and want the continuation of trials for the crimes of that period.
