Anthropic warns, in the documents filed for its stock market listing, that the damage caused by its artificial intelligence systems could be so extensive that not even the entire global insurance industry would be able to cover it. The company lists intellectual property theft, security incidents, data loss, and unpredictable AI system behavior among the risks.
Existing policies may cover security breaches, privacy violations, cyber outages, and fraud, but they generally exclude bodily injury and physical damage. Experts consider this a major gap as artificial intelligence is increasingly used in companies’ operations.
According to Gartner, more than 2,000 deaths worldwide could involve artificial intelligence to some extent by the end of 2026. Insurers are struggling to assess the risks because the technology is evolving rapidly, while companies do not always know all the ways their employees use AI.
Specialists are debating whether dedicated policies with strict compensation limits are necessary, or whether AI risks should be integrated into existing insurance policies. In the meantime, companies could face higher premiums, stricter conditions, and additional exclusions ahead of comprehensive regulations.
