In Portugal, the first round of the presidential elections took place on Sunday, and the far-right candidate, André Ventura, qualified for the second round, scheduled for February 8. Antonio José Seguro, the socialist candidate, received the most votes, 31%, while Ventura came in second with 23%. This situation reflects a rise of the radical right in the Portuguese political landscape. Political scientist Antonio Costa Pinto highlights the challenges that the minority right-wing government will face if it has to negotiate with Ventura.

Antonio José Seguro, with a solid political career, has promoted democracy as a reaction to extremism. André Ventura, known for his passion for football and for founding the far-right party Chega, has managed to surpass traditional right-wing parties. Analyst Paula Espirito Santo believes that, regardless of the outcome of the second round, Ventura is solidifying his status as the opposition leader and is preparing the ground for future legislative elections. His discourse, focused on issues such as corruption and immigration, resonates with many Portuguese dissatisfied with the current economic situation.
