Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski has threatened to invoke Congress's powers to block President Donald Trump's claims to acquire Greenland. Speaking in Copenhagen, Murkowski emphasized that Greenland should be considered an ally, not an asset, and mentioned that Congress has control over the budget, which gives it tools to limit the president's actions.
Democratic Senator Chris Coons added that he will continue legislative efforts to restrict Trump's power to act unilaterally, in the context of a bipartisan group of lawmakers introducing a bill to prevent the invasion of a NATO member state. Trump's threats have generated a diplomatic crisis, and Danish and Greenlandic officials have met with representatives of the American administration to discuss the situation. Trump suggested that he could impose tariffs on countries that do not support the acquisition of Greenland.
