Almost 400 migrants were rescued by the Greek Coast Guard off the coast of Gavdos Island on the second day of Christmas. In an operation conducted 35 nautical miles south of the island, 365 people seeking asylum in the European Union were rescued by a Coast Guard vessel, with the assistance of a Danish cargo ship and a FRONTEX aircraft. Additionally, another 30 migrants were located and transferred to Crete.

On Christmas Day, 39 migrants were rescued from an inflatable boat. These crossings are dangerous, and shipwrecks are common, with many casualties in recent months. Since the beginning of 2025, over 16,770 migrants have arrived in Crete, and the Greek government has suspended the examination of asylum applications to manage the migratory flow. The Minister of Migration stated that Greece is not a "hotel" for migrants, emphasizing the government's strict policy.
