The Albanian government has decided to lift the temporary ban imposed on the TikTok platform, which had been in effect for almost a year. This ban was instituted in March 2025, in response to a tragic incident in which a teenager was stabbed by a peer, the conflict being generated by a dispute on social media.

Although the ban was in effect, TikTok could be accessed via VPN. The recent decision, which is set to be published in the official Journal, was made prior to a complaint filed with the Constitutional Court by journalist associations and non-governmental organizations, which argue that the ban violates press freedom.

Critics have also come from the political opposition, in the context of the electoral campaign in May 2025. At the same time, other countries, such as Australia, have imposed restrictions on access to TikTok for young people, for reasons related to children's mental health.
