Albania announced on Tuesday that it has designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a 'terrorist organization' and Iran as a state 'that supports terrorism', in the context of the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. The ruling socialist party adopted this resolution with a parliamentary majority, despite the opposition's boycott.
The document emphasizes that the Islamic Republic of Iran uses terrorist means to promote its foreign policy and condemns cyberattacks against Albanian institutions, including an attack in 2022 that led to the severing of relations with Iran. Albania hosts thousands of members of the People's Mujahedin of Iran, an organization considered terrorist by Tehran, making it a target for Iranian hackers.
The United States and the European Union have already designated the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, and Iran has responded by designating the naval and air forces of EU member states as terrorist organizations. This escalation of tensions has the potential to affect regional stability.
