The intelligence services and police in Greece arrested a 36-year-old Georgian citizen on Monday evening, suspected of espionage at the Souda naval base in Crete, used by the American military.
The arrest took place at the international airport in Athens, and investigators are looking into whether the man gathered information for Iran, in the context of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, being present at the naval base for two days. Photos of the base were found on his mobile phone, and the investigation also targets possible recordings of the aircraft carrier's movements.
This arrest is the result of a prior investigation by the Greek national intelligence service (EYP) in Chania, near the base. In the past, an Azerbaijani citizen was also arrested for espionage in the same area. The Souda naval base hosts approximately 1,000 people, including American military personnel and civilian staff.
