A powerful earthquake off the Kamchatka peninsula has triggered tsunami warnings for Hawaii, Alaska and the coast of Japan, with evacuations in affected areas.

An 8.7-magnitude earthquake has struck in the Pacific Ocean, 136km off Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, triggering tsunami warnings for Hawaii, Alaska and the coast of Japan. US President Donald Trump issued a warning as Japan began evacuating areas and tsunami waves hit Hokkaido. Fukushima nuclear plants were evacuated but no anomalies were reported. Russia reported tsunami waves of 3-4 meters near the epicenter.
