The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 39.5 km, 111 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The USGS initially assessed the magnitude at 7.5 but corrected it to 7.4. This region, known for its intense seismic activity, has been the scene of other major earthquakes recently, including one of 8.8 in July, which generated a tsunami and forced evacuation over a wide area in the Pacific.
