On January 10, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred off the Talaud Islands archipelago in Indonesia, 244 kilometers north-northwest of the Tobelo area, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake struck at a depth of 77 kilometers, and was initially estimated at 6.8 by specialists, but was later revised to 6.5 and then to 6.4. Although the seismic waves were felt by many residents, no casualties or significant material damage were reported. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency stated that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat, but warned the population to remain vigilant in the face of possible aftershocks.
