On Friday evening, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 shook northeastern Afghanistan, causing the death of 12 people and injuring four others, according to a toll announced on Saturday by the Afghan government and the Red Crescent. The earthquake occurred at 8:42 PM local time (4:12 PM GMT), at a depth of 186.4 km, with the epicenter located 35 kilometers south of Jorm, in Badakhshan province. The tremor was felt in several regions, including the capital Kabul.
The deputy government spokesman, Hamdullah Fitrat, confirmed the deaths, mentioning that eight members of a family died in the Gosfand Dara area, while a child of about two years survived. Afghanistan is a country prone to earthquakes, especially in the area of the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates intersect. In the past, earthquakes have had a devastating impact, such as the one in August 2025, which killed over 2,200 people. The lack of adequate infrastructure hampers rescue operations in the mountainous regions.
