The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, announced that approximately 2.6 million migrants have left the United States since Donald Trump returned to the White House, of which over 650,000 have been arrested for expulsion because they refused to leave voluntarily. Noem emphasized that the majority of these individuals were in the U.S. illegally. Trump made combating illegal immigration a priority, his actions being a response to the increase of the phenomenon during the Biden administration. He mobilized the National Guard and intensified the activities of federal immigration police (ICE), which led to violent protests, especially in cities run by Democrats, who contest anti-immigration policies. Organizations for migrant rights have expressed concern about mass expulsions and the restrictions imposed on the right to seek asylum.
