On Monday, the Greek coast guard intervened to rescue 230 migrants on board two inflatable boats near the island of Gavdos, south of Crete. The operation was launched after Frontex vessels spotted the overloaded boats. Those rescued were transferred to the port of Paleochora. This is just one of many recent interventions, as the flow of migrants has increased significantly in the area in recent months, with 7300 arrivals in the first six months of the year. Local authorities are calling for urgent measures to manage the situation.
