A recent study has found 20 unknown viruses in the kidneys of bats in Yunnan province, China, of which two henipaviruses raise alarm bells. These viruses, similar to the deadly Hendra and Nipah viruses, can be transmitted through urine and have mortality rates of up to 80%. Experts warn that contaminated fruit could facilitate transmission of the viruses to humans and animals. The findings underline the need for detailed analysis to assess the risks associated with bats, especially in the context of habitat destruction.
