The Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona performed the world's first face transplant using a donor who died by euthanasia.

The complex procedure, which lasted approximately 24 hours, involved advanced neurovascular microsurgery techniques and was carried out by a team of about 100 medical professionals. This is the fourth facial transplant performed in Spain and one of 54 carried out worldwide. Carme, the woman who received the transplant, stated that her life has significantly improved after the procedure, allowing her to speak, eat, and drink again. Spain's euthanasia law, in effect since June 2021, facilitated this type of donation, and the donor, a woman who requested euthanasia, agreed to donate her face.
