"Tanmaxxing" is a term derived from "looksmaxxing" that refers to achieving an intense tan, regardless of the associated risks. Dermatologists, such as Silvina Pugliese from NYU Langone Health, emphasize that repeated exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation not only increases the risk of skin cancer but also contributes to premature skin aging.
This trend, popularized on social media, includes unsafe methods such as sunbathing during peak UV radiation hours and using tanning beds. Former advocates of excessive tanning, like Jessica Saggio, now express regret and emphasize the importance of skin protection.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and avoiding prolonged sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
