Political topics on the rise

B9 Summit and External Relations: The Bucharest 9 Format Summit was a central event, hosted by President Nicușor Dan, with the participation of the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, and the NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte. The presence of Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in Bucharest highlighted discussions about protecting children and adolescents and mental health, with a meeting at the Cotroceni Palace with Mirabela Grădinaru, partner of President Nicușor Dan. Romania received thanks for the support provided, with a generally positive sentiment regarding Romania's involvement in the European Union and regional security, although some analysts expressed dissatisfaction with the summit format. Nicușor Dan confirmed that the SAFE program is on schedule, with billion-dollar contracts for the military industry signed by the end of May, strengthening Romania's role in regional security.

Administrative Reform and Legal Challenges: Covasna Tribunal suspended the job cuts in local administrations, a measure from the Bolojan Government's reform. This decision was a blow to the plan to reduce local administration positions by 30%, contested by unions. The Ombudsman, Renate Weber, challenged the ordinance for the SAFE program, adopted by the Bolojan Government, arguing that a dismissed government no longer had the authority to adopt an ordinance. This move was also supported by a complaint made by AUR.

Fight Against Tax Evasion and Corruption: Adrian Nica, head of ANAF, revealed schemes through which about 400 million euros were lost to the state budget, indicating debts of 2.3 billion lei from approximately 80,000 commercial companies that evade payment by closing bank accounts. ANAF intends to intensify controls over individuals with undeclared wealth and income and is working on a new version of the Virtual Private Space (SPV) for taxpayers. In another note, Mihai Savin, President of the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR), was detained along with two other individuals from the institution in a case of forgery and use of forgery related to the retroactive issuance of a mission order. Additionally, prosecutors Teodor Niță and Gigi Valentin Ștefan from Constanța are targeted in searches in a case of influence peddling and other corruption offenses.

Transparency of Public Administration: Prime Minister's Chancellery published a comprehensive report on the efficiency of public administration, highlighting a slow and uneven pace of contracting funds from PNRR. The report shows that in 2024, Romania had over 1.2 million state employees, with personnel expenses exceeding 164 billion lei, and Ilie Bolojan accused the Ciolacu Government of inflating the state administration. A "mafia" of employees brought from abroad, with illegal commissions charged, was also reported.

Foreign Investments and Infrastructure: Bran Castle was in the spotlight due to the acquisition of a significant stake by Joel Weinshanker, the American businessman managing Elvis Presley's legacy. Although it was initially rumored that he had bought the castle, representatives of the Habsburg family clarified that Bran Castle remains in the family's ownership, and Weinshanker is a strategic partner. Regarding infrastructure, the Capital City Hall announced the extension of the M3 subway line from Păcii/Preciziei to the Capital Beltway, Chiajna, and the Latin Quarter.
