The conflict in Ukraine is at the forefront of international politics. Continued offensives by the two armies, coupled with Russia's heavy attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, have prompted calls from the Kiev leadership to strengthen air defenses and to grant permission for the use of Western weapons against military targets on Russian territory. But the political agenda is diverse, with the US election campaign, the Middle East conflict, immigration and extreme weather events high on the agenda.

The war in Ukraine

  • Russia launched a new air strike on Ukraine for the second day in a row, targeting the country's energy infrastructure.
  • Ukrainian commanders described Monday's airstrike as the largest since the conflict began.
  • The Ukrainian leadership appealed to Western states to allow it to attack military targets on the territory of the Russian Federation as the most important strategic measure to stop the air strikes.
  • Mercenaries from the Wagner group have announced that they are no longer taking part in the fighting in Ukraine, indicating a potential change in Russia's strategy.
  • Other topics

    • Japan has urgently scrambled fighter jets after a Chinese airliner entered its airspace, calling the incident a serious violation of sovereignty.
    • Poland was again on alert after an unidentified object, possibly a drone, entered its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine.
    • In Pakistan, a massacre took place on a highway where at least 23 people were killed after being dragged out of vehicles by gunmen.
    • Bangladesh and India are facing major floods that have killed dozens and affected millions, sparking mutual accusations between the two countries over the use of water as a weapon.
    • Pavel Durov, Telegram's CEO, is under investigation by French authorities for 12 offenses, including drug trafficking and child pornography.
    • Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of an election debate with Kamala Harris, heightening political tensions in the United States ahead of the election.
    • Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern warning to Hezbollah's leader after the Israeli attack on Hezbollah's infrastructure, stressing that the conflict is not over and escalation is imminent.
    • Olaf Scholz has vowed to step up deportations to Germany after a terrorist attack in Solingen, marking a significant change in the country's asylum policy.
