New technology can put music in your ears without the need for cșști

How about a new technology that will allow you to leave your headphones at home (or on the shelf) and listen to discreet music without disturbing anyone else and without having to buy (or wear) extra hardware?

That's the promise from US Penn State University's "Audible Enclave" research into a new technology that uses ultrasonic waves to provide private listening without headphones.

It works in a similar way to the 3D beamforming and wavefield synthesis technology used in cutting-edge music spaces such as The Sphere.

Now, music and sound effects can be placed anywhere in the physical space of the arena, delivering a personalized "it's coming from there" audio experience, regardless of the actual location of the speaker and no matter where you are.

Chinese scientists develop world's smallest LED screen with virus-sized pixels

Scientists have achieved an incredible density of 127,000 pixels per inch by building LEDs just 90 nanometers wide using perovskite. These pixels were used to make what has been called the world's smallest light-emitting diode (LED) display.

Developed with the help of colleagues at Cambridge University, LED displays are smaller than a grain of sand. This is important because many screens on electronic devices (such as cell phones) are enhanced by trying to squeeze more pixels into a smaller space.

In theory, the more pixels, the sharper and better the image quality.

Scientists build a device that generates electricity using the Earth's rotation

In a controversial experiment, a team of physicists investigated whether we could harness the Earth's rotational energy to generate electricity.

As detailed in a paper published in the journal Physical Review Research, the team led by Princeton University physicist Christoper Chyba aligned a special device made of a thin manganese-zinc ferrite conductor and electrodes at each end at an angle of 57, making it perpendicular to our planet's rotational motion and its magnetic field.

The team observed that the device generated 17 microvolts of electricity.

Google will let you make AI podcasts from Gemini's Deep Research

Google's Gemini app now lets you generate audio summaries based on Deep Research. This means you can turn the detailed reports generated by Gemini into a conversational podcast with two AI "hosts."

Since launching Audio Overviews as part of its NotebookLM AI-powered note-taking app last September, Google has been steadily improving the feature, allowing you to guide and interact with the hosts. Also, earlier this week, Google brought Audio Overviews to the Gemini app for free users and Advanced subscribers, allowing you to turn slides and documents into AI podcast-like conversations.

Tencent launches T1 reasoning model, amid growing AI competition in China

Chinese tech giant Tencent launched the official version of its T1 reasoning model on Friday night, intensifying competition in China's increasingly crowded artificial intelligence sector.

The updated T1 model offers faster response times and improved capabilities for processing extensive text documents, the company said in a post on its official WeChat account.

T1 can "keep the content logic clear and the text neat and tidy," the post said, while the rate of hallucinations is "extremely low."

Browser Use, the tool that makes it easier for AI "agents" to browse websites, raises $17 million

We may not yet have a common definition of an AI "agent," but a plethora of startups are looking to create "agent" tools to automate various online tasks. One such firm, Browser Use, has attracted interest from developers and investors because of its solution that makes websites more "readable" for AI agents.

Browser Use told TechCrunch that it has raised a sizable $17 million seed funding round led by Felicis' Astasia Myers, with participation from Paul Graham, A Capital and Nexus Venture Partners. The company's funding was not previously reported.

Anthropic appears to be using Brave to power web search for its chatbot Claude

Earlier this week, Anthropic launched a web search feature for its artificial intelligence chatbot platform Claude, bringing it in line with many of its rivals. It wasn't immediately clear which search index would power the feature - one possibility was that Anthropic had developed its own index. But the evidence suggests it was Brave Search, the search engine maintained by browser developer Brave.

As software engineer Antonio Zugaldia noted on Friday, Anthropic this week added "Brave Search" to the "list of subprocessors" in its documentation - the list of Anthropic partners that process Claude data. British programmer Simon Willison reports that at least one search in Claude and Brave returned identical citations. Willison also found that Claude's web search function contains a parameter called "BraveSearchParams."

Nvidia improves AI reasoning with Blackwell Ultra

Nvidia has revealed new details about its latest AI chip platform, Blackwell Ultra, which aims to improve AI's ability to reason and act on a user's behalf.

The enhanced platform, unveiled at Nvidia's annual GTC conference, builds on the existing Blackwell chip, providing more computing power to help AI models break down complex queries and analyze multiple possibilities more efficiently.

AI Chatbots: The New Target for Hackers with Zero Knowledge

Artificial intelligence is paving the way for a new type of cybercriminal - one that doesn't need hacking experience but can easily create sophisticated malware. Recent research shows that generative artificial intelligence systems such as DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT can be manipulated to produce malicious code, posing a growing cybersecurity threat.

In a report published Tuesday by Cato CTRL, the threat intelligence division of cybersecurity company Cato Networks, researcher Vitaly Simonovich revealed how he exploited these AI tools to create software capable of stealing Google Chrome login credentials. Simonovich had no previous malware programming experience.

Cloudflare lures web-scraping bots into an "AI maze

Cloudflare, one of the world's largest networked internet infrastructure companies, has announced the launch of AI Labyrinth, a new tool to combat web-scraping bots that scan websites for AI training data without permission. In a blog post, the company says that when it detects "inappropriate bot behavior," the free tool, lures crawlers down a path of links to AI-generated bait pages that "slow down, confuse, and waste resources" of those acting in bad faith.

Websites have long used the honor-system approach of robots.txt, a text file that grants or denies permission to scrapers, but which AI companies, even well-known ones like Anthropic and Perplexity AI, have been accused of ignoring. Cloudflare writes that it sees more than 50 billion web crawler requests a day, and while it has tools to detect and block malicious ones, this often causes attackers to change tactics in a "never-ending arms race."

Google launches real-time AI video features for Gemini

Google has begun rolling out new AI capabilities for Gemini Live, allowing it to "see" what's on your screen or through your smartphone's camera and answer questions in real time, Google spokesperson Alex Joseph confirmed in an email to The Verge. These features, which have been in the works for nearly a year, were first unveiled under the name "Project Astra."

A Reddit user shared that the new features appeared on his Xiaomi phone, as reported by 9to5Google. In a subsequent post, the user showed off the new Gemini screen-reading feature in a video. This is one of two new features that Google said in early March would be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers as part of the Google One AI Premium plan later this month.

Brad Smith, Microsoft CEO, on Microsoft at 50: leadership, innovation and the road ahead

Microsoft President Brad Smith recently joined the GeekWire podcast for a special conversation at GeekWire's Microsoft@50 event at Town Hall Seattle's Microsoft@50 event. As the tech giant marks its 50th anniversary, Smith reflected on its journey, addressed pressing challenges and shared his views on what's next for the company and the industry.

Recounting Microsoft's evolution from its beginnings to its current mission to empower people, Smith quoted CEO Satya Nadella: "If you want to be cool, go work for Apple. If you want to make other people cool, come work for Microsoft." He highlighted a defining trait shared by Microsoft's three CEOs - Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella - which he said embodies real leadership: curiosity.

Google's latest Gmail update: What 3 billion users need to know

Google has confirmed that Gmail has received an AI-powered search update designed to deliver more relevant results based on how users interact with emails and senders. This improvement aims to address the long-standing challenge of searching through all emails.

"If you've ever struggled to find information in your inbox, you're not alone," Google says, emphasizing the convenience of this new feature.

However, this also means that AI is being used on users' email data. Google has assured that privacy remains a priority, stating that these AI tools are part of the "smart features" category, which users can control through personalization settings.
