Vice President of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu announced on Wednesday that he has made an official request to the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera Rodríguez, for the establishment of a temporary support mechanism at the European level.
He emphasized that the rapid increase in fuel prices puts real pressure on companies in the European Union, including in Romania, affecting operational costs and delaying investments.
Negrescu highlighted that energy can account for between 10% and 20% of a company's costs, and the rise in fuel prices can lead to increases of 15–30% in affected sectors such as transport, agriculture, and industry.
"These developments fuel inflation and exacerbate social risks, especially in the more vulnerable economies of Central and Eastern Europe," said Negrescu.
He called for a rapid response at the European level to protect the economy and the purchasing power of citizens, mentioning that the European Union has previously demonstrated the ability to intervene effectively in crisis situations. Such a mechanism would allow member states to act quickly and in a coordinated manner, protecting the economy and jobs.
