The European Union's budget proposal for 2027 includes financial commitments for projects and programs, which do not translate into immediate payments, but into reserved funds that can be disbursed over several years. It reflects the assessment of the cohesion policy for 2021-2027 and encourages member states to use resources for priorities such as competitiveness, defense, and the energy transition.
The budget comes in the context of global challenges, including the pandemic, the energy crisis, and the war in Ukraine, and will continue to support Ukraine through the Ukraine Mechanism. Priorities include investments in security and defense, flagship programs such as Erasmus+, and support for agriculture. Romania contributes 33 euro cents for every euro received from the EU, having access to non-repayable European funds of over 60 billion euros. The budget proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council by the end of 2026.
