The European Commission has officially requested several member states to lift the temporary controls implemented at the internal borders of the Schengen area, in order to promote more "effective" regional cooperation.

This request comes in the context of efforts to restore freedom of movement within the European Union, which has been affected by security measures adopted in the name of combating illegal immigration and terrorist threats.

The Commission emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Schengen area and the freedom of movement for citizens.

Additionally, European authorities urge member states to collaborate more effectively in managing security at external borders, to avoid the need for internal controls. These measures are essential for strengthening unity and cohesion within the European Union.
