The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests has announced the publication for consultation of the draft Government Decision regarding the development of SUMAL 3.0, a new integrated information system for forests. Interim Minister Diana Buzoianu emphasized the need for a modern system equipped with cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence to enable real-time monitoring of timber transport and rapid interventions in case of suspected fraud.
SUMAL 3.0 will integrate all necessary components for forest management and will replace the current system, SUMAL 2.0, which has reached technological limits. The project includes updated rules for timber traceability, digital monitoring of transports, and the integration of modern surveillance technologies.
It is also expected to integrate monitoring systems through satellite imagery and LiDAR sensors, developed with PNRR funds, to streamline control activities. This initiative is essential for increasing control capacity and complying with European obligations regarding the fight against deforestation.
