During the weekend, the beaches in Malaga were closed after E.coli bacteria was detected in the water, according to the publication Express. Councilor Penélope Gómez confirmed that the pollution is the result of storms that affected the area, explaining that the combined sewer system leads to the discharge of wastewater into the sea during rain.

Malaga was affected by flash floods, and cleaning operations were initiated on the beaches. The problem was exacerbated by the disposal of wet wipes in toilets, which causes blockages in the sewer system. The Campo de Golf-San Julian, Guadalmarm, La Misericordia, Sacaba, San Andres, and El Palo beaches were closed, and the police intervened to restrict access.

In Benalmádena, four beaches were also closed after reports of skin reactions. In the long term, Malaga intends to redesign the pipe network to prevent such issues.
