On July 18, the Concordia research station in Antarctica recorded an extreme temperature of minus 84.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest value since 2012. Located in the interior of the continent, the station is in the midst of winter, without sunlight, and temperatures below minus 80 degrees are common during this period.

Gabriele Carugati, the head of the station, emphasized that although such values are not without precedent, they are remarkable even in this extreme environment. Concordia, known as the most isolated research station in the world, hosts studies in seismology, astronomy, and climate, and the researchers there are nicknamed 'ice astronauts' due to their isolation. The absolute record for the lowest temperature remains at the Vostok station, with minus 89.2 degrees Celsius recorded in 1983.

Despite the extreme cold at Concordia, researchers emphasize that these temperatures do not contradict global warming, considering the complexity of weather systems and the vulnerability of West Antarctica to melting.
