Former President Traian Basescu reacted vehemently to comments made by George Simion, AUR leader, who thanked Donald Trump for removing Romania from the Visa Waiver program. Băsescu considers it unacceptable to thank a person who humiliates the Romanian nation. He also criticized Simion's remarks about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, calling him a "political reject". Simion claimed that Romania has spent money to obtain visas, trying to meet the conditions for the Visa Waiver Program.
