European Commission Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu has warned about the results of the international PISA assessment, which show that too many young Europeans are struggling with basic skills. The official said Brussels will launch an Education Package in November to support member states and develop the skills young people need in everyday life.

Mînzatu stressed that education remains, first and foremost, the responsibility of the member states and that there is no simple solution, nor one that can come exclusively from the European Commission. According to her, the PISA results must be treated as a serious warning.

The assessment, conducted in 2025 and recently published, included approximately 760,000 15-year-old students from around the world, mainly young people born in 2009. The test is conducted once every four years and measures skills in mathematics, reading and science.

Romanian students scored below the OECD average in all three areas. Only 48% reach the minimum proficiency level in mathematics, 52% in reading and 54% in science, compared with OECD averages of 65%, 69% and 74%, respectively. The Ministry of Education says the results in mathematics and science are close to those recorded in 2022, while reading scores fell by 16 points value change exactly preserved, but typo?
