The President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced new tariffs of 25% for Nvidia and AMD, as part of an innovative mechanism that allows the American state to collect a portion of the sales of artificial intelligence processors to China. This measure comes after the White House allowed Nvidia to resume shipments of H200 chips to China, reversing a previous policy of banning exports of advanced AI hardware. The tariffs are intended to protect this arrangement from potential legal challenges and to generate direct revenue for the American government.

The tariffs apply to chips such as the H200 from Nvidia and the MI325X from AMD, which are imported into the USA and then re-exported. The measure also targets other American companies that wish to export AI chips. Trump emphasized that, although companies will be able to sell these chips, the USA will receive 25% of the sales value. The recent proclamation specifies that chips intended for the development of domestic artificial intelligence infrastructure will not be affected by these tariffs. These measures are part of a national security investigation and a broader trade war, which could lead to additional taxes on semiconductor imports.
