Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, has urged the German parliament to extend humanitarian aid, emphasizing that maintaining a low budget is a strategic mistake. Currently, the Bundestag is preparing to finalize the federal budget for 2026, and humanitarian aid has been reduced from 2.3 billion euros to 1.05 billion euros in 2025. Grandi warned that a decrease in aid will generate a new wave of migrants, similar to that of 2015-2016, when many Syrians sought refuge in Germany. He explained that funding cuts from countries such as the USA, Germany, and the United Kingdom have affected assistance for refugees from conflict zones like Sudan, thereby facilitating the work of traffickers.
