The European automotive industry is under pressure and hopes for a compromise in the package of measures that Brussels will present next month, which could modify the 2035 ban on the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines. Manufacturers like Volkswagen and Renault have set ambitious goals, but demand for electric vehicles has fallen short of expectations, and competition from China is increasing. German groups and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) are calling for a relaxation of the rules that favor electric vehicles, requesting the acceptance of CO2-neutral fuels and the maintenance of hybrids. Although the market share of electric vehicles has increased, obstacles such as charging infrastructure and high energy costs persist. The European Commission's package will decide whether the EU will remain on the path to eliminating internal combustion engines or will accept compromises.
