The European Union has decided to ban imports of condensate from Russian projects, such as Yamal LNG, starting from January 1, 2027, according to the official journal of the community bloc. This measure targets light fuel obtained as a by-product in the liquefied natural gas production process.
The decision is part of a broader sanctions package, which includes a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine, in the context of the ongoing conflict with Russia. The EU is thus intensifying pressure on Moscow, after already banning imports of Russian oil in December 2022.
Currently, the community bloc has almost completely eliminated imports of coal, steel, and petroleum products from Russia, which in 2021 accounted for 43% of fuel consumption.
Gas condensate, primarily produced within the Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG-2 projects, is used as a raw material in the petrochemical industry and for the production of automotive fuels.
