American customs authorities have completed, as of May 11, refunds totaling $35.46 billion, including interest, for the trade tariffs imposed last year by former President Donald Trump, which were later declared illegal.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency announced that it has received over 126,000 refund requests, of which nearly 87,000 have been validated. Documents filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York show that approximately 15.1 million shipments are eligible for refunds, and amounts for 8.3 million of these have already been calculated and approved.

The total value of the duties that could be refunded is estimated at $166 billion.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump exceeded his legal authority in imposing these tariffs.

Additionally, American companies, including auto manufacturers and Under Armour, are expecting profit increases due to the refunds of tariff duties.
