Tesla has announced a voluntary recall of nearly 3 million vehicles in China due to two distinct safety issues.
The first issue concerns the retractable electronic door handles, which can cause serious accidents by failing the low-voltage electrical system, preventing the rapid opening of the doors. The company will apply warning labels and update the software to allow automatic window lowering in case of an accident. The recall includes models 3, Y, S, and X, both imported and produced in China between March 2019 and April 2026.
The second recall relates to deficiencies in the driver attention monitoring systems used in partially automated driving modes. Tesla will introduce software updates to improve driver attention monitoring. This measure comes in the context of increasing competition in the Chinese market, where Model Y deliveries dropped by 18% in July compared to the previous year.
U.S. authorities are also reviewing stricter rules for door opening systems.
