Romania's government debt rises to 58.9% of GDP in July 2025, exceeding the threshold of 1.070 billion lei

In July 2025, the public administration debt of Romania reached 1,070.18 billion lei, an increase from 1,039.96 billion lei in June. As a share of the economy, government debt rose from 57.3% to 58.9% of GDP. Medium and long-term debt reached 1,004.9 billion lei, while short-term debt stood at 65.19 billion lei. The majority of the debt, specifically 884.026 billion lei, consists of government securities. The domestic debt of public administration was 523.116 billion lei, while external debt increased to 547.063 billion lei, representing 30.1% of GDP. The central administration debt rose to 1,046 billion lei, while local administration debt reached 24.175 billion lei.
